Sample Letter For Aid And Attendance (GUIDE)

While not needed with the entire Aid and Attendance application, a cover letter for the veteran's Aid and Attendance benefit is advised to keep materials organised and communicate to the VA what you are seeking.

A cover letter with fillable areas for the applicant's information may be found here.

Note that in this article, the term "applicant" refers to the veteran or surviving spouse who is applying for the Aid and Attendance pension benefit.

All italicised words in brackets [like this] are placeholders for information relevant to your application.

How to write Letter For Aid And Attendance?

Here are some general guidelines to follow while drafting your letter, regardless of why you're writing it:
  1. Make sure your letter is addressed to a specific individual in the financial assistance office at the institution. Consult the school's website's department directory if you don't already have a contact.
  2. While you're on the school's website, look up the procedures for filing an appeal. Are there any forms that they require? You'll have a better chance of succeeding if you follow the steps exactly.
  3. Always address the recipient by name in the body of your letter: Mr Jones, Mrs Smith, etc. You want to strike a personal yet polite tone with your message. It's best not to address them only by their titles. Be direct, concise, and kind in your communication.
  4. Keep track of the forms you've submitted to your school, the status of your award, and why you're appealing.
  5. Always express gratitude to the person you're writing to for taking the time to consider your request.
  6. Don't go too fancy with the appearance of your letter for the sake of clarity and readability. The tried-and-true block letter format will do the trick and make reading a breeze.
  7. Be honest about why you're writing. That isn't just a way of saying I didn't receive enough financial help. What is your motivation? Describe your situation and the exact reasons you desire more assistance.
  8. Keep your letter to one side of a single sheet of paper.

Sample 1: Letter For Aid And Attendance

Respected Sir,

I'm Jonny, a first-year student who is incredibly excited to start University College this autumn. Thank you for providing such a comprehensive financial assistance package. My family has suffered a severe financial hardship as a result of my application being accepted.

My father lost his job the day after I got the news about my prize. He was abruptly let go after 30 years at The Widget Factory. Our family's primary source of income is — was — him.

My mother continues to work, but only part-time in a low-wage retail position. As a result, we will be unable to give the additional monies I will require to pay for overdue tuition, books, and costs.

My earnest desire to go to college in the autumn is now jeopardised. I'd like my award reconsidered, taking these additional mitigating circumstances into account. I appreciate your assistance and appreciate your taking the time to consider my appeal.

Please find attached proof of my father's dismissal, as well as your office's mandatory financial aid appeal form. Please don't hesitate to contact or e-mail me if there's anything else I can do or if you have any queries that I can answer. I'll get back to you right away.

Sincerely,
