An ESA is not specially trained to do work or carry out tasks, unlike a service animal. Instead, for people with emotional, neurological, or cognitive disabilities, an emotional support animal may carry out several tasks, such as:

Stopping impulsive, harmful, or self-harming behavior.

Advising someone with a mental illness to take their medication as prescribed.
giving a severe depressive illness sufferer a cause to live.

Taking a step to soothe a person with PTSD when they are having an anxiety attack.
